State Labs

Today, 16th of November, we went to the State Labs in Celbridge.
When we got there we went into a room and a man, Michael Gun told us a bit about what they do there, such as autotopsies and testing animals for diseases.
After he was finished giving us background info we were split into 4 groups and I was in the orange group. We each got a lab coat to wear while they showed us around the labs.
We were brought around different labs and we got a different speaker for each lab we went into. I found some of it complicated but they tried to simplify it as best they could. It was really interesting :) There was this french lady who showed us one of the labs and she was so cute :D I could have listened to how she said "animals" all day xD
When we were finished we went back to the room we were in that morning and we were given a pen, a ruler and a fuzzy sticker thing :L They were all about science week which was last week.
 T'was a good day :D

Minco Naas

15th of November we went to Naas for the last time (i think?),for mini-company :D
Orla was just seeing what stages were at with our products. She got numerous people to tell the room what they were doing and CBS boys school were there and they sold their products to us at lunch.
when we came back Orla showed us this movie about business and how to behave etc. It was a pretty funny movie :L It was really cheesy which was good cos i think it got everyones attention that way.
And thats pretty much sums up our day at Naas

Work Experience :D

On the 8th of November all us TY's headed to our different work experiences. Some to a bakery, others to colleges, and me, to Moss Vet in Naas :D
On the car journey there i could hardly contain my excitement but then was hit with a bunch of nerves, which soon took over. I actually felt sick from the nerves.
When I arrived they were all expecting me and I was welcomed by kind and encouraging smiley faces by all the empolyees. I was led to the back, where all the surgery and animals are kept in there kennels. The first thing I saw was a beagle puppy and was asked to hold her. She was probably more nervous than me as she knew something painful was coming her way :L
Then I got to watch how the vets sadate the animals before they operate or stick needles in them, because well, you wouldnt like to feel it would ya? :L
 For the first day, it was filled with alot of blood and guts but I really enjoyed it. I got to watch;
- Two female dogs get spaeyed [neutered]
- How to clean a wound and stitch it up
- An eye removal (poor dog :( )
- Various simple prosedures such as sadating the animals and checking for fleas and all that stuff.
During my whole working experience in the vets I got to see so much I had never seen before. I got to play with alot of the animals and I cleaned out kennels and i even got to fill up a syringe for a dogs booster :D I felt so smart cos i did it right :O
This whole experience in the vets has just helped me make my mind up even more that its DEFINITLY a career I wanna be a part of.

Some animals in the vets that I got to take a sneaky picture of :DD ;

Colour Me Beautiful :)

On Friday the 15th Of October, we were visited by Liz and Louise from Colour Me Beautiful. They took us for 3 classes in the morning. They told us all about what colours suit us based on our skin tone, eye colour and hair colour. This included what colour clothes, eyeshadows and even lipsticks will suit our compection best :) They told us our catagory and we had to sit with our group. I was a soft and the celebrity that represented this catagory was Jennifer Aniston, which I was confused about because I thought i would have been a clear, as these are people with dark hair and blue or green eyes. In the soft group were people with dirty blonde hair; in-between blonde and brown.
I felt out of place in the group but as they told us about our group and the colours we were suited best to I found out that I fit perfectly into the catagory :D
They also told us about body shapes and how you can be various body shapes such as Pear Shaped or Hour Glass figure.
It was a very enjoyable talk and I thought it was really helpful!

Geography Project :D

We have been assigned a project in Geography class. The majority of the class are in groups of 3. I am with Orlaigh and Oriana :) Were off to 6 different countries. I am heading to Kazakhstan and Cuba. We get €12,000 for the year to spend money in our countries. When we book our flights, the price is taken out of our €12,000 :( When I first looked up flights to Kazakhstan they were coming up to €5,000, which was way too expensive. I had to get a flight to Moscow in Russia and then get a train down to Kazakhstan. This only cost me a little over €300 which was really really cheap :D So its all good :) I still havent done much on Cuba yet as I am focusing on Kazakhstan until I get all the info I need :)

How amazingly gorgeous does that look D:
I wanna go :(

Cuba also looks spectacular. The landscape is very foresty but it really looks nice :)

I hope to have more done on my Geography project by the next time I blog :)

Mini Company visit from Orla

On Monday the 4th, Orla from the Enterprise Board came to visit the TY's. When she came she told us to tell the other TY's about our Mini Company Project. There were some really awesome ideas such as the group "Knot a problem". They are making a little pin like thing which can take out knots.
Our group, Me, Saidhbh, Grace, Róisín and Ciara are designing a plug like stopper which will reseal cans. We got the idea because cans are alot cheaper but it sucks because you cant reseal them :/ so we decided to make a reseal-plug. Our group is called "Can-Do" :))
All is going well so far. We are working on our design and we are handing out surveys to other people in the school and also outside school so we can get different opinions and get a rough idea if people would be interested in buying our product.
Were all really excited because at the talk, Orla said that our product was exactly what they would be looking for in the competition and its also a solution to a problem - A resealable can.

BT Young Scientist

We have been working away at various projects since we have been back at school. One is the BT Young Scientist project. Im in a group with Kate & Aoife :) Were testing C-elegans which are a type of worm, and have a very short lifespan so they are used in labs for testing ageing. We are adding different types of antioxidants to these worms to see if antioxidants can actually make you live longer. We may discover the secret to eternal youth ;DD
We went to NUI Maynooth where we are getting help with our project and we are allowed to use their lab and facilities there whenever we need too. We also have read ALOT of articles on the C-elegans and how long they live and various other facts that we need to know for our project :)
We also had to write a one page proposal for it which was hard work.
I reeeeally wanna get through to the BT young scientist because it looks like soo much fun when you get through D:
