BT Young Scientist 2011 Photos

BT Young Scientist 2011

Myself, Aoife and Kate took part in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2011, 2 weeks ago. While we were there I stayed in my Granny and Grandads which was fun :) <3
Our project was titled "The Free Radical Theory of Ageing and the Counteracting Affects of Antioxidants." So basically our project was testing antioxidants on micro-scopic worms called C.Elegans to see which antioxidant would affect their lifespan and make them live longer. We tested commonly known antioxidants such as: Turmeric, Cranberry, Green Tea, Acai, Gingko, and Cherry. Normally C.Elegans live for 2 weeks and when we tested the antioxidants they all did increase their lifespan but one antioxidant made a signifcant increase of their lifespan. Green Tea helped the C.Elegans live for 7 weeks which was an amazing result for us to achieve. The worms lived 5 weeks longer than they would have. This was amazing!
It was great when our fellow TY chums came to visit us in the BT Young Scientist :) It was great to see them supporting us.
Our project got "Highly Commended" on the awards night which was such a nice surprise and was a big achievement for us.
This project would not have been possible without the wonderful help we recieved from NUI Maynooth and we are so greatful for all they have done for us.

While we were there we got to meet some amazing people and we also got to get to know the other Wolstans girls involved in the Young Scientist.
The BT Young Scientist was such an amazing experience to be a part of and its so great to be able to say that i took part in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2011.

State Labs

Today, 16th of November, we went to the State Labs in Celbridge.
When we got there we went into a room and a man, Michael Gun told us a bit about what they do there, such as autotopsies and testing animals for diseases.
After he was finished giving us background info we were split into 4 groups and I was in the orange group. We each got a lab coat to wear while they showed us around the labs.
We were brought around different labs and we got a different speaker for each lab we went into. I found some of it complicated but they tried to simplify it as best they could. It was really interesting :) There was this french lady who showed us one of the labs and she was so cute :D I could have listened to how she said "animals" all day xD
When we were finished we went back to the room we were in that morning and we were given a pen, a ruler and a fuzzy sticker thing :L They were all about science week which was last week.
 T'was a good day :D

Minco Naas

15th of November we went to Naas for the last time (i think?),for mini-company :D
Orla was just seeing what stages were at with our products. She got numerous people to tell the room what they were doing and CBS boys school were there and they sold their products to us at lunch.
when we came back Orla showed us this movie about business and how to behave etc. It was a pretty funny movie :L It was really cheesy which was good cos i think it got everyones attention that way.
And thats pretty much sums up our day at Naas

Work Experience :D

On the 8th of November all us TY's headed to our different work experiences. Some to a bakery, others to colleges, and me, to Moss Vet in Naas :D
On the car journey there i could hardly contain my excitement but then was hit with a bunch of nerves, which soon took over. I actually felt sick from the nerves.
When I arrived they were all expecting me and I was welcomed by kind and encouraging smiley faces by all the empolyees. I was led to the back, where all the surgery and animals are kept in there kennels. The first thing I saw was a beagle puppy and was asked to hold her. She was probably more nervous than me as she knew something painful was coming her way :L
 Then I got to watch how the vets sadate the animals before they operate or stick needles in them, because well, you wouldnt like to feel it would ya? :L
 For the first day, it was filled with alot of blood and guts but I really enjoyed it. I got to watch;
- Two female dogs get spaeyed [neutered]
- How to clean a wound and stitch it up
- An eye removal (poor dog :( )
- Various simple prosedures such as sadating the animals and checking for fleas and all that stuff.
    During my whole working experience in the vets I got to see so much I had never seen before. I got to play with alot of the animals and I cleaned out kennels and i even got to fill up a syringe for a dogs booster :D I felt so smart cos i did it right :O
 This whole experience in the vets has just helped me make my mind up even more that its DEFINITLY a career I wanna be a part of.

Some animals in the vets that I got to take a sneaky picture of :DD ;
